Following up to the legendary Liquid Swords wasn’t easy—and GZA didn’t try to recreate it.

Released in '99, Beneath the Surface leans quieter, more measured—still lyrical, still precise, but less cold and cinematic than Liquid Swords. The focus here is on control. GZA stays locked in—calm delivery, layered writing, and that same ability to say more with less.

The production shifts, too. You still get some touches from RZA, but the overall sound is more varied—less stripped-down grit, more late ‘90s polish creeping in. It gives the record a different feel, but the core stays intact. Genius.

Tracks like “Amplified Sample,” “Crash Your Crew,” and “Breaker, Breaker” carry that classic Wu DNA, while features from Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and Masta Killa keep it grounded in the Clan.

It’s not as immediate as Liquid Swords—it’s a slower burn. But if you sit with it, it opens up.
