Alice in Chains took a darker turn with Alice in Chains (the Tripod record). It’s slower, heavier, and more stripped down than what came before—less polished, more real.

This was also the last studio album with Layne Staley, and you can feel that weight all the way through. For a lot of people, this is where grunge really shifted—less scene, more isolation.

Rolling Stone described it as “startling, staggering and palpable” in its impact, which pretty much nails the feel of this record. 

“Grind,” “Heaven Beside You,” “Again,” “Frogs”—it’s all here. Not an easy listen, but that’s kind of the point.
